Army Nurse Set to Invade Fort

Another first for women is being chalked up this summer by Lt. Col. Jeanne M. Treacy, Army Nurse Corps, who will attend the Army’s Command and Staff College in Fort Leavenworth, Kans., in August.

‘Tm not the first woman to Invade this male bastion,” said the attractive, blond colonel. “WAC officers have been going there for some time, but this will be the first time any woman connected with the Army Medical Services has been included in the student body.”

Col. Treacy is sure to be able to hold her own among her classmates, who will include officers of all branches of the Regular Army. By graduation time she will be expected to know as much about brigade operations, troop movements, speechmaking, effective writing, as well as aggressor forces and forms of war, as the officer who goes on to command an Infantry regiment.

Average Student

“With regard to aggressor forces,” said Col. Treacy, “I’ve seen the results of that and it will be interesting to find out the other side of that pattern. I’m a very average student, but I shall try to justify the selection of me as the first Army Nurse Corps enrollee.”

 Brig. Oen. Conn L. Milbum, Jr., director of personnel and training in the office of the Surgeon General, in informing Col. Treacy of her new assignment, said that he expected her to finish at the top of her class.

A Philadelphian. Col. Treacy is the daughter of the late Dr. and Mrs. Edward Treacy. She graduated in 1939 from the School of Nursing of the Osteopathic Hospital in Philadelphia.

During World War n she served as a reserve officer ' with the 38th Station Hospital, which saw service in the European Theater of Operations. After demobilization she attended Michigan State University and earned her BS degree in nursing education. Re-entering the Army in 1949, she held various nursing assignments in the South and Middle West and completed the requirements for her master’s degree at Columbia University at the same time.

Col. Treacy was on duty in Okinawa from 1956 to 1958, when she returned to Walter Reed General Hospital for a year. In 1959 she joined the staff of the Army Surgeon General as head of the career branch, Army Medical Corps.

Loves Travel

“In this capacity,” remarked Col. Treacy, "I have the responsibility of various aspects of assignments as well as educational programs for the Nurse Corps on a worldwide basis. It has been a very rewarding assignment, especially since I like people and travel. I have gone with each one of the assignments I’ve worked out —in my mind’s eye, of course.”

When asked about her other hobbies, Col. Treacy said her work was her vocation and avocation. As to collecting things, she does anything that she happens to like and the budget will permit.

Col. Treacy will leave Washington on August 10. In the meantime she hopes to greet her brother-in-law and sister. Air Force Col. and Mrs. Alexander W. Trediani [Frediani], who are returning from Beirut, Lebanon. Col. Trediani has served as an instructor at the American College there and is going to Maguire Air Force Base, N. J.

After her “student” days, Col. Treacy has orders for duty In Germany in January. This pleases her very much. “I would like to remember the place I knew previously in a better light than when I left it last," she said. “I have been told it is lovely now and itwillbe fun to see.”

Catching Rays At The Treacy Building

The commercial district along Germantown Avenue, centered around Germantown and Lehigh Avenues, is an important relic from Philadelphia’s past. It was once a center of North Philadelphia’s Jewish community. The stretch survives today as a largely quiet corridor serving the surrounding neighborhood. The Treacy Building, holding up the center of the district at 2700 Germantown Avenue, stands as a reminder of the avenue’s earliest days as a bustling shopping destination.

Joseph Treacy lived in a three story house at 1005 West Lehigh Avenue, next door to Fitler, Edwin H. & Co. Cordage Factory, a fire damaged rope manufacturer being re-used as a meat packing plant. In 1906, he acquired the property, demolished it, and commissioned architect Clyde Smith Adams for a new commercial building for this high traffic corner. He was proud enough to name it the Treacy Building after himself.

Treacy died in 1907 so its unlikely he ever got to see the final product, but what a final product it was–a long three story structure built of Pompeiian brick with four retail spaces, nine offices, four “lodge rooms,” eight ante rooms, and two extra rooms of flex space. At first, the Treacy Building was primarily occupied by the Uptown office of the Reliance Loan Company. Over the next decade, the offices of many concerns moved in and out, notably the studio of famous photographer Charles H. Clime, the offices of City Magistrate Byron E. Wrigley, the Philadelphia Textile Manufacturers Association, and the Philanthropic Mutual Life Insurance Company, which is still in business in Plymouth Meeting, PA.

A Son's Tribute To His Father

There have been many touching tributes from fathers and mothers to their children, who have left this sphere of existence, but it is very seldom we find one so beautifully expressed as that by the eighteen - year - old son of Luke Treacy, of the Phoenix Sporting Goods Mfg. Co., of Philadelphia.

C. Emerson Treacy, who is now attending school at the Worcester Academy, while his mother is very efficiently conducting the busi- ness left by the husband and father, recently published the verses herewith.

They were not written for publication, but merely as an expression of feeling to be distrib- uted among the relatives and friends of the family.

It has been sent to us, and we know it will touch a chord in the hearts of many fathers.

To My Pal

So long, Dad !

I miss your great big smile.

This parting's awfully hard,

But it's only for awhile.

The gay old world seems gray

And I'm feeling pretty blue,

But I'm going to make the best of it,

For that's just what you'd do.

You didn't stop when despair said "stop" ;

You didn't give in when gloom said "give in" ;

You set your teeth and raised your head a bit,

And started to "grin" and "grin" and "grin."

I'm going to fight just like you'd fight;

I'll cultivate your smile,

So when Mother dear looks at me,

She'll see you all the while.

And when the Reaper comes again.

And my duties here are done,

This gray old world at large will say-

"Like the Father, so the Son."

...Thomas and Mary lived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania at the time of the 1880 US Census report.  They moved across the river to Camden, New Jersey sometime in the early 1890's.  Thomas owned one or more saloons in Camden from the mid 1890's to 1920 (the start of Prohibition in the United States).  His son, Bernard, was born in the United States and was a Federal Marshall, a semi-professional baseball player, and a local politician (he was given the nickname "The Mayor of East Camden").  Bernard died in 1952.  Thomas and Mary had a total of six children, at least five were born in the US, but only four children survived to adulthood. I believe Thomas and Mary died sometime in the mid-1920's in New Jersey, but no one is certain because death records have not been located.

Any information that anyone could provide would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you!

Dawn Harvey

...If I can locate these people, then I can locate Thomas Tracy's parish.  His relative, Henry Tracey, was born sometime between 1830-1833 in Ireland to Matthew Tracey (born sometime around 1789 in Ireland) and Ann Carr (born around 1795 in Ireland).  Henry married a woman by the name of Elizabeth and they had a son named Matthew Tracey born sometime around 1855 in Ireland.  Henry's other silbings include:  Catherine born sometime around 1831, Ellen, Mary born sometime around 1841 and Patrick born sometime around 1843.  I am not confident of Ellen's birth year because she lied about her age on US records.  Another cousin of Thomas', Joseph Treacy (spelling variation), was born on August 10, 1842 in Ireland.  A descendent of Joseph's family wrote that he was born in County Mayo, but I don't have any physcial records confirming this statement. I appreciate your help!  Regards, Dawn.

Dawn:

I was unable to find a record for Henry's baptisma but I did find his marriage record to Elizabeth Hoey and baptismal records for five children starting with Matthew. The other children were Patrick 1857 John 1859 Mary 1861 Henry 1863 The last four children were baptized in St. Mary's parish in Meath which is part of Drogheda. Roots Ireland did not have a baptismal record in Mayo from 1837-1847 for a Joseph Treacey + variants.
