Hubert J. Treacy

Hubert J. Treacy, for many years a member of our Society and a regular attendant at its quarterly meetings, died on July 14, 1938 at his home 1370 Gipson Street, Far Rockaway in his sixty-first year. Our Society has lost a most sincere and valuable member. A Requiem Mass was said for the repose of his soul at the Church of St. Mary, Star of the Sea, at Far Rockaway on July 18, 1938.

The news of his death was a profound shock to those of us who knew him best. As a man, he was admired for his many outstanding qualities by thousands throughout the City of New York. He was humane to the core, sympathetic and understanding. He was patient and considerate of those who made incessant demands on him and in innumerable ways served individuals. He was devoted to his family and his church, loyal to friends, always courteous and obliging; a man of much culture with a keen and clean mind and a remarkable memory. His passing closed a long and extraordinary public career.

His family meant more to him than anything else in life. We have not known a more beautiful relationship than that which bound all the members of his family together with ties of affection and respect.

Mr. Treacy was born February 12, 1877 in New York City and was baptized in the Church of the Nativity. He attended grammar school on 14th Street between 1st and 2nd Avenues until he and the family moved to 126 East 108th Street in 1888 in St. Cecelia's Parish. In 1896 he became a member of All Saints Parish. He was one of the first Fourth Degree members of the Knights of Columbus in New York and a member of Guiding Star Council. He graduated from Public High School and attended Dwight Academy at night, completing his schooling there. He became associated with the firm of Austin, Nichols & Company in 1891 and entered the City Service on May 25, 1900 as an investigator in the old Department of Public Charities. He remained in this position until he transferred to the Fire Department on March 1, 1909. In January, 1910 he was appointed in charge of the Division of Requisition and Property Accountability. On June 5, 1918 he was appointed to the position of Chief of the Bureau of Repairs and Supplies in the Fire Department. In the early part of the year 1926, he took full charge of a comprehensive program prepared by former Fire Commissioner Dorman to augment the fire- fighting facilities in the Department, embracing the building of fifty-two new fire-houses, the replacement of old apparatus with new up-to-date equipment and the extension of activities of the Fire Department to newly built sections. Immediately after that the fire insurance rates were reduced in the outlying sections. On December 10, 1934 he was appointed to take charge of the Division of Fire Department Buildings. His retirement became effective on Easter Sunday, April 17, 1938.

At the time of his death he was a member of the American Irish Historical Society and the Knights of Columbus. He was one of the organizers and first presiding officer of the Business Men's League of New York. He was a member of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick in the City of New York, and Fire Department Holy Name Society, the Inter- national Association of Fire Chiefs, and the Eastern Association of Fire Chiefs. He was a committeeman on the New York County Democratic Committee, and a member of the Dennis J. Mahon, 9th Assembly District Democratic Club. Mr. Treacy was a member of the Mayor's Committee for the Reception of Distinguished Guests. He is survived by his widow Mrs. Lillie Treacy, a son, Hubert J. Treacy, Jr., two daughters, Margaret E. and Julia E. Treacy, a sister, Catharine and three brothers, James, Martin V., and Patrick J. Treacy, to all of whom we extend our sincere condolences.

FBI Special Agent Hubert John Treacy was murdered in cold blood on Friday the thirteenth, March 1942. He was the thirteenth FBI member to die in the line of duty...Hubert Treacy...was a young man - only 28 on that fatal Friday the 13th. He was serious, likeable and quietly ambitious. Barely six months before he had married beautiful Eileen Elizabeth Collins, daughter of Inspector Maurice Collins, of the Washington police. The young couple had set up housekeeping at 915 South Washington Street, in Alexandria, Virginia...
