Laughlin Tracy.

Philadephia, Sept 3 & 10 1747.

Run away on the 30th of August last, from Robert Boyle, tanner, of Fallowfield township, Chester county, two servant men, one named

Laughlin Tracey, about 6 foot high, 22 years of age, lately came from Ireland. Had on, a brown short jacket, a waiscoat of strip'd flannel, black breeches, with blue old stockings, tow trowsers, coloured with tann, and some other clothes, a coarse hat, his hair cut off, and sometimes wears a wig; he has a large mark from his breast to this navel, as if it had been burnt. The other named Michael Vaughan...

James Tracy, 9 May & June 1751

The other names James Tracy, about 28 years of age, a tall full faced subtle fellow, big browed: Had on when he ran away, a brown coat, with slash sleeves, a blue jacket, buckskin breeches, white wool stockings; they have strings in their shoes...

Philadelphia July 7, 1748

Run away, on Monday last from Robert Boyle, of Fallowfield Township, Chester County, an Irish servant man, named Laughlin Tracey, 6 foot high, 21 years of age, thick nosed, with a down looking countenance, and speaks pretty good English; Had on when he went away, a whitish coloured coat, with black lining, rather too long for him, a new olive coloured jacket, wanting the sleeves, with cloth buttons, a worsted cap, coarse tow trowsers, and a felt hat; he has a scar from his right breast to his navel with burning, has taken with him a gun, and a large power horn, almost full of powder, and several other things. Whoever takes up or secures said servant, so as his master may have him again, shall have Forty-shillings reward, and reasonable charges, paid by Robert Boyle.

James Tracy (c.1835 Ireland - 1905 St. Louis Missouri) famous Police Detective

Tracy was born in Ireland in 1839. He went to Totonto, Canada, with his parents when 1 year old and in a few months was brought to St. Louis.

He worked as a shoemaker at a bench next to that of Lawrence Harrigan who was chief of police and they became great friends. He joined the police force in 1867 but was off for a few months. He was reinstated and served continuously ever since. He has made several trips within the boundaries of the United States after prisoners. He served at many weddings and social events and was known among all classes of citizens.

Though small in stature, he was one of the greatest fighters in the business and a clever boxer. His son, Thomas Tracy, who died May 19 1899, was also a detective, and, like his father, had an excellent reputation as a thief catcher.

Detective Tucker, now assigned to the Bertillon Room, pays this tribute to his old partner:

"A gamer man never lived. When we had dangerous men to handle, it was always, 'come on' with Jim. He never said 'go ahead'. He was honest and loyal and the man never lived of whom he was afraid."
