Patrick J Treacy (1880-), Marconi telegraphist, of
Templemore Tipperary
Patrick J
Treacy |
Patrick J. Treacy was born in March 1880 to James Tracey & Margaret Ryan. He was
employed by the British Postal Service and his first appointment was as a sorting clerk and telegraph
learner in Killarney Co. Kerry. His brothers Joseph Bernard
Treacy and Cornelius Joseph
Treacy also worked for the post office. He married Delia
OKeeffe of Killarney Co. Kerry in 1909 and his brother Joseph
Bernard Treacy married her sister Hanora O'Keefe in 1898. He was first man to transmit a transatlantic message
from the newly instituted Marconi commercial service in 1907, from Clifden Co
Galway. He also received Marconi’s reply from Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, over
2,000 miles away. British, American, Italian and Canadian flags were hoisted
on the masts supporting the aerial in celebration. In the 1901 Census, he is living at Killarney, Co.
Kerry. When he got married in 1909, his address is Clifden Co Galway. In the
1911 Census, he had moved to South Cornwell. Wireless World and Radio Review - Volume 2 - 1914 Marconi telegraphists Treacy , P. J. , Poldhu [south Cornwall] Joseph O'Connor (1951) Hostage to Fortune. M. F.

close, personal association with that momentous achievement, because I knew

out the messages... |

Can
anyone help me get some info about my father's grandparents etc. My father
Cornelius Godfrey Treacy was born in Cork, at the church of St.Peter in 1908 to
parents Christopher or Cornelius Treacy (a telegrapher at Cork main post
office) and Alice Sinfield who came from Surrey England in about 1870-80's.
Don't know who her parents were or anything about them. My grandfather
Christopher or Cornelius died in Cork in 1910 and Alice went back to either
Surrey or Sussex. The Treacy family was reported to have originally come from
Templemore, Tipperary. One of my fathers Uncles had a large farm in Winnipeg,
Canada. My father had 1 brother, Christopher and 2 sisters, Dorothy and Eileen.
All are now dead. gerry
