File relates to Thomas Treacy’s unsuccessful application for a military service pension under the Military Service Pensions Act, 1934. Applicant claimed membership of the Irish Citizen Army (ICA) in the service periods between 01 April 1918 and 30 September 1923 during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. Subject was awarded a Service (1917-1921) Medal in 1942, information held on file. Subject states that he served with the British Army during the First World War and was held in a German Prisoner of War (POW) Camp for an undefined period. Thomas Treacy claims that he took part in removing arms (six revolvers) and ammunition from a US Army supply boat; a reception for Countess Markievicz at Westland Row (June 1918); a raid for arms on canal boat at Lucan (1918) and a reception for Countess Markievicz at Dún Laoghaire. He states that joined the ICA in Dublin in February 1919 during the War of Independence (January 1919 – July 1921) and officially left the British Army on 15 March 1919. Serving under the command of James O’Neill (MSP34REF8368), the applicant claims that he was appointed Sergeant Instructor and took part in burning of ‘Belfast Boycott’ goods at Shackelton’s Mills, Lucan. Taking the anti Treaty side in the Civil War, Thomas Treacy states that under the command of John Hanratty (MSP34REF1362) he was reported to Marrowbone Lane Distillery on 28 June 1922. He was sent to Barry’s Hotel and the Hamman Hotel where he claims he was promoted to Captain. Subject states that he took part in the defence of these outposts until the evacuation on about 03 July 1922. Also claims that he was involved in the attempted destruction bridges during the Night of the Bridges [05-06 August 1922.] Subject in his application form and reference John Hanratty state the location was Blanchardstown while applicant in letter (09 July 1940) and Advisory Committee interview state "Broon Bridge"/Broomebridge. Applicant claims that he was arrested at home by National forces on 19 August 1922 and taken to Thompson’s Garage and Wellington Barracks. Subject states that he was interned in Mountjoy Prison, Dublin and Newbridge Camp, County Kildare until 23 December 1923. During his imprisonment in Newbridge, Thomas Treacy states that he took part in a 14 or 16 or 32 day hunger strike (different lengths of time given). File includes references in support of the subject’s claim from Frank Gallagher (1940); John Hanratty (1940; 1942); Richard McCormick (1940); John Byrne (1940); Stephen O’Mara [1940]; James Murray [1950] and Christopher Crothers (1950).
