Anthony (Brisbane), The Presbytery, Rosewood, Queensland. 1959-1961 All Hallows Annual Rev Anthony Treacy, Deceased 2 November 1959 (Brisbane dioc) The Rev. Anthony Treacy Students at All Hallows in the late twenties and early thirties will read with shocked surprise and regret of the untimely death in Brisbane, Australia, of Father Anthony Treacy. He died after a short illness on 2nd November, 1959. He belonged to the class of 1932 and was ordained at All Hallows on June 5th of that year, going straight to Australia and to the archdiocese of Brisbane. Physically robust, active and energetic, a fine figure of a man, the years had weighed lightly on him; and no one would suspect that his priestly ministry would be so suddenly curtailed. Twenty-seven years on the mission in Australia had not changed Tony Treacy. His character was in keeping with his physical attributes—strong, rugged, utterly simple and sincere—the stuff of apostles and confessors. That high sense of vocation and dedication never changed in him. Priestly zeal and virtue adorned and completed a character which was always noble and serious and tenacious. Pastoral cares and duties deepened and strengthened his lively and intrepid Faith. He was a tower of strength in any parish, and an example of complete integrity to all the people. Human respect and acceptance of persons were utterly foreign to him. Archbishop O’Donnell, co-adutor bishop of Brisbane, preached the panegyric over Father Treacy, at the funeral Mass in St. Stephen’s Cathedral. He was eloquent and discerning in his delineation of the character of the deceased priest: “The approach to God by prayer and penance, by a rugged self-discipline, by a faith so vivid that the eternal verities are an ever present reality, is characteristic of the stock from which he sprang. And these are precisely the qualities which distinguished the priesthood of Father Treacy. No one realised better than he that in order to sanctify others effectively one must first sanctify one’s self. Uncompromisingly he attended to his own spiritual formation, and there was nothing haphazard about his efforts. His strength of character saw to that. He prayed much and studied with avidity the sacred sciences. He kept himself abreast of the problems of the day as they affected the souls of his people.” The Archbishop continued: “There are certain traits in a man’s character which distinguish him and are remembered long after he has gone. It was quite a remarkable thing about Father Treacy that in conversation with his fellow priests he showed little interest in topics other than those which had to do with priestly work. In the discussion of these he was illuminatingly eloquent, speaking of the things that were nearest his heart. Eager to learn from the experience of his brethren, it never crossed his mind that others could learn something from him. Such indeed was the humility of the man. “Father Treacy took life very seriously, especially in regard to his priestly duties, a trait which tended at times, especially to those who did not know him so well, to obsecure a geniality of soul which in reality was never absent. His standards were high and if ever there was a hint of a hard side to his character it was only that he demanded a high standard also from those in his care, and especially in family life”. Among the priests who were present at Father Treacy’s bedside were Father Michael O’Connell and the writer, both of whom were his contemporaries at All Hallows. Requiem Mass which was celebrated by his cousin Father James Conneely, was attended by a large gathering of priests from Brisbane and Toowoomba dioceses. At the time of his death, and for the past eleven years, Father Treacy had been parish priest of the rural parish of Rosewood, some forty miles from the city of Brisbane. Archbishop Duhig, who was absent from Brisbane at the time of Father Treacy’s death, presided and preached at the month’s mind which was held in Rosewood. May the gentle, generous and manly soul of Anthony Treacy rest in peace. P. McMorrow.
