The Traceys of Fermanagh can trace their history back to the beginning of historical records, as Fermanagh formed part of the territory of the Cenél Eóghain.

O’Tracy of Fermanagh

The following is the location of the clann based on the map ‘Topographical and Historical Map of Ancient Ireland’ by Philip Mac Derrmott in 1846.

The historian Peadar Livingstone, expresses an opinion that the Traceys may not be natives of Ulster. He states “Similarly, is the Uí Neill origin adopted by the Farrys, the Fees, the Treacys and the Corrigans genuine? They could easily have been planted in Fermanagh during the Sileach supremacy, 1000-1200, or they could easily have been attracted towards giving themselves a Cinéal Eoghain progenitor.” It may be that these Traceys were of the Uí Bairrche and may have settled in Ulster in the 10th or 11th century, at the time of the adoption of surnames by the Irish. The Fir Monach locha Éirne (Mooney of Loch Erne) whose name later became the name of the county of Fermanagh, were an Uí Barriche tribe of Leinster brought there by St. Tigernach, Bishop of Cluain Eui (Clones, Co. Fermanagh/Monaghan) (†544-550AD AU) an Uí Bairrche saint. Muinntear Treasaigh were herenachs of his church in Fermanagh. Also referenced are Muinntear Ghormain, both family names were kings of Uí Bairrche. In addition, there are Tracey and Gorman families in Clones, with Gorman placenames.

Mac Gabhráin [circa 1700s] finishes his description of the termoner lands and families by writing:

'That is the number of termoners who are in Fermanagh at the time of the family of Donn Mór son of Raghnall' [Mag Uidhir].

Ó Treasaigh (Treacy): Cill Tighearnach (Kiltierney, near Ederney).

Ó Gormáin (Gorman, O'Gorman): Teampall Ghuirmin (Templegurmeen [Temple Gorman?], belonged to vicarage of Cill Nadhaile [Kinawley]). Caladhchoill (Callowhill).

Termoners: This is the only word used in the text to designate the lay hereditary farmers of church lands. Primarily and strictly the ttermoner, farmed termon lands (tearmann, from Lat. terminus, limit, sanctuary, protection), that is lands not only farmed for the benefit of the church, but also having the privilege of sanctuary.

Mac Murchaidh, Ciarán & Mac Murchaidh, Ciaran (1990) Some Notes on Mag Uidhir Fhear Manach. Clogher Record, Vol. 13, No. 3 (1990), pp. 92-99

Muinntear Treasaigh, O Tracy, termoners of Cill Tighearnach, which see. Munter Slevine (O sleibhne) were herenaghs of Magheri Kilterny in 1609 (Inquis.) they were a family of poets appearing as such in Fm. under the years 1022, 1031, 1168. [where they are described as chief poets of the north of Ireland]

Muinntear Ghormain, O Gorman (Mac Gorman being more a Leinster and Munster name), termoner of Teampull Ghuirmin and of Caladhchoill which belonged to the vicarage of Cill Nadhaile (Kinawley).

Ua Duinnin, Padraig (1917) The Maguires Of Fermanagh. Gill agus a mhac.

Killtiernaigh church and the two chapels of Domh naugh and Glanumha were also consecrated by St. Tyernagh. The tearmonaghs muintir Treassy; the patron day April the 4th.

Church Families

To look after this land the church founders selected a family as tenants. The head of this family was called a ‘herenach’ or a ‘termoner’…was hereditary.

Church: Kiltierney

A charge was brought against John Maguire for tendering an illegal oath to Dominick Noone...Bernard Tracey a farmer from Derrygonnelly, also gave evidence against Noone. He said that Noone had been in his service for two months and was not worthy to be believed on his oath in a court of justice. He had found him guilty of stealing oats and so had turned him out but had first given him a good character reference.

Considering that this is practically a new look team Ederney gave a grand display to hold Cashel to a draw. The final score was Cashel 3-3, Ederney 2-6. The scorers for Cashel were Tracey, Leonard, Gallagher and Mc Laughlin and for Ederney, Monaghan, Mc Hugh, Murphy, Maguire and Lunny.

1951

Mary O’Reilly, a tinker was sentenced to two months in prison for stealing money on two occasions from Mrs Ellen Treacy, Fossagh. She had arrived pedalling her wares and snatched the money from the table. She was caught on the second occasion. The sentence will not take effect if she leaves Northern Ireland immediately. Aged 17, she was married since she was 15.

First in the Cashelnadrea district to have turf saved is Mr. Thos. Treacy, Woodvale House, Kilcoo.

1954

In the Junior League Derrygonnelly defeated Devenish by 3-3 to 1-2. Devenish had a grand full back in J. Mulrone, who gave a sound display while others to impress were P. Keown, R, Mc Dermott and J. Treacy.

Enniskillen Gaels complete the double of Minor League and Championship by beating gallant Devenish by 2-4 to 1-2 in the League final. There was a starring performance by J. J. Tracy, Newry College.

1955

Death of Devenish man. Mr. Patrick Treacy, Aughmuldoney at the age of 93. He was a successful farmer, fervent Catholic and sterling Nationalist.

All the early season matches have been wiped out by the frost and snow which has made the grounds unplayable. Team secretaries for the year are , Mr. F. Murphy, New Street, Ederney, Mr. P. J. O’Shea, Tawnynoran, Belleek. Cashel, Richard Tracey, Cashel. Mr Seamus Heron, Brollagh, Belleek for Garrison.

Devenish Minors capture title in a game which featured an unbelieveable transformation. With 8 minutes to go Kinawley were leading and had been easily on top for most of the game before Garrison scored four goals in the final quarter to win by 5-3 to 3-3. J. J. Carty and P. T. Treacy were prominent throughout as was Benny Carty and Ferguson but the chief architect was Pat Casey who raced up and down the line making changes and encouraging his proteges.

Roslea defeat Devenish by 1-3 to 0-3 to reach the Fermanagh Senior Championship Final. In a remarkable game Roslea were totally dominant for 50 minutes yet only led by 1-3 to 0-1. M. J. Mc Glone starred for Devenish at full back taking about 40 kickouts over the hour from Roslea misses. Roslea were missing eight of their selection through illness. Garrison were without their usual full back and their college star P.T. Treacy and had enough chances to win but fluffed close in chances including a forward who dropped the ball with a gaping goal in the closing minutes.

Peter Cox gave a display of high fielding and long kicking as Belleek defeat Devenish in the Fermanagh League in a scoring spree at Magheramena Park by 4-11 to 2-8. Young Tom Daly at centre full is the coming county full back as his long ground kicking has about it the hallmark of greatness. The half back line of O’Shea, Slevin and Bogle covered themselves with glory and Sean Gonigle played county star J. J. Treacy completely out of the game.

1958

Thirty schoolboys from Devenish and Kinawley arrived on All Saint’s Day to Belcoo in order to play the Fermanagh Schoolboy Championship Final on a day of driving wind and rain – only to find that there were no goalposts. So they promptly moved over to Blacklion, County Cavan to play the game which Kinawley won by 5g-4p to 2g-0p. With the wind and rain Kinawley led by six points at half time. Michael Tracy and J. J. Cleary goaled for Devenish and a feature of the play was the remarkable defence of Sean Mc Manus, Kinawley’s full back. The secretary and trainer of the Garrison team who was apparently their only supporter was forced to take up the line flag. He made a wrong decision and corrected it but was threatened by a section of the Kinawley crowd and while one held him another struck him from behind. J. J. Cleary, M. Treacy, Shea, Ferguson and Feely were best for Garrison while Sean Mc Manus, Tony Cullen, Brian Darcy, Des Corrigan, Gillece, Smith and Mc Hugh were best for Kinawley.

Isabella Tracy (b. 24 April 1819 Arderth Fermanagh d. 4 June 1907 Hebron Twp McHenry Il) m. Hugh McNulty 1851 Arderth Fermanagh (LDS)

Isabel TRACY born 1819 married Hugh McNulty of County Donegal in 1851. In her 1906 obituary published in an American newspaper it was reported that Isabel was married in the town of her birth - Arderth (sic), County Fermanagh. The information for the obituary was provided by her illiterate son-in-law who was also from County Fermanagh. Have searched church records of western Fermanagh looking for a record of this marriage without success. Could Arderth be a mis-spelling of an official name like Ardgart or Ardess? Or is it a colloquial name that is unrecorded? Suggestions? Tom McCarthy

Children:

John Tracey & Sarah Duffy
My ggmother Sarah Tracey (Duffy) family is from fermanagh according to English census. Her father was Daniel Duffy and her mother Rose Anne Roddy or Ruddy. She married John Tracey in Durham England in 1876. I believe John Tracey may have also been from Fermanagh. His father was Lawrence Tracey, a mason. There is also some indication the Duffys may have been from Inishmacsaint in County Donegal? Anyone searching the Duffys or Traceys? Thanks.

Patrick and Catherine emigrated to Quebec, Canada following their son James. The birth order of their daughters is uncertain but Jane, Anne, and Kitty moved to the USA. Biddie has descendants in Onsley (?) Quebec. Mary Stuart had no descendants. Patrick and Catherine appear on the 1851 Canada Census, Quebec, Ottawa County, Clarendon Twp with their son James and daughters Mary and Ann. Patrick is shown on the Agricultural Census with 20 acres under cultivation, 8 acres under crops, and 12 acres of pasture. He also has 30 acres of woods and wild land. He has two oxen and the property is listed as being "midlin" good but not well watered. Patrick does not appear on the Census Records for 1861 so must have died before that date. Catherine is widowed on the 1861 Census, aged 60. She is 69(?) on 1871 Census and not on the 1881 Census therefore she died between 1871 and 1881. On the 1861 Census her religion has been changed from Roman Catholic to Church of England. On the 1871 Census she is shown as Roman Catholic.

I have an 1871 Marriage record for Phillip Tressy, Newtown (ie. Newtownbutler); (father = Thomas G Tressy, a Farmer, deceased) & Mary Goodwin, Gubb Island (a nearby townland) My source is the Fermanagh Registrar's Records for the the Parish of Galloon. The date of marriage was 16/1/1871. I'm fairly certain that this Tressy is a "Treacy" and that the somewhat unusual spelling reflects the way the surname was (& still is) pronounced by many locals. The Goodwin mentioned is undoubtedly one of my people but I have not yet been able to demonstrate the precise relationship.

P.J. Treacy

The Late P.J. Treacy 31 July 2003

The death at his home in Garrison, following a seven month illness that required hospitalisation in the Erne, the Royal and Belvoir Park hospitals and home care generously delivered by his wife, Bernie and his five sisters, of P.J. Treacy was met with genuine profound sadness and regret. Mr Treacy, who had just turned 45, was the father of three boys, the eldest, Thomas a student at St Michael’s College, Sean and Niall, pupils at St Martin’s PS, Garrison. He was a mould-maker in Belleck Pottery where he was employed for the past 27 years and, outside of his family and the Pottery, he had two other abiding passions, the family farm at Aughamuldoney where be had built his home and GAA. His contribution to the GAA was outstanding, starting with under-age football with his beloved Devenish with whom he won a senior championship medal in 1985 before venturing into refereeing, club administration (he was vice-Chairman at the time of his death) and the county youth scene. Here, he fittingly ended up as Youth Board Chairman, the unanimous choice of the clubs. Before the Fermanagh v Cavan game at Brewster Park, a minute’s silence was strictly observed to his memory.

P.J. was the only son of Tess and the late Thomas Joseph Treacy, Aughamuldoney. He attended the local Devenish No 2 PS and St Mary’s High School, Brollagh before entering the world of work. The Pottery didn’t beckon immediately but, by the time it did, he had tasted farm work and liked it. He was an early riser whose custom custom was to go up to the farm before heading off to Belleck and, after coming back in the evening, returning to the farm before setting out on his GAA pursuits. His love of farming he inherited from his late father who died less than two years ago. In 1989, he married the former Bernie Patton, from Killygordan and settled in their newly-built bungalow home on the farm. It was where P.J. could put his feet up at the end of another fulfiled day, reading the newspapers, the sport especially and, the odd time, watching tv sport. And, when the boys came of age, he in turn brought them fishing.

The deaths of his father, his uncle, John Francis O’Brien (who was his Godfather) and his brother-in-law, Martin Gallagher, his sister, Imelda’s husband were difficult times. But, as during his illness, he maintained a very strong faith which he was careful to pass on to his children. It was fitting he should spend his last months in his own home where his wife, Bernie, his principal carer, proved a tower of strength. His sisters were always available and, likewise, the local GP’s, clergy and the District Nursing Team based at Rathmore Clinic in Belleek. It all helped him lead a fairly independent life, something he tenaciously fought to maintain until the last few days. Such was his strength of will that he, Bernie and his youngest sister, Angela had planned to go with the Clogher Diocesan pilgrimage to Lourdes next week. It was the family’s desire that donations in lieu of flowers to go to the Clogher Lourdes Invalid Fund, c/o Peter Carty, funeral director, Garrison.

His remains were removed from his late home to Mary Queen of Peace Church, Garrison for noon funeral mass for which the principal celebrant was Very Rev Patrick Canon Lonergan, P.P. who was one of a number of his regular priestly visitors, to home and hospital. Canon Lonergan described the deceased as, ‘a great family man and a great GAA man as well’. Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.

John James Treacy (23/11/1936-13/5/2016)

Fermanagh GAA great Treacy was a 'leader without ego'

A highly regarded retired school Principal, Mr. John James Treacy, whose passions were his family, his faith and football, has died.
The much loved husband, father and grandfather, late of Drumlin Heights, Enniskillen, who was a member of the 1959 Fermanagh All Ireland Junior Winning GAA team, passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, May 13, after an illness, aged 79.

They laid the late Fermanagh GAA great John James Treacy to rest in the arms of a summer afternoon in his beloved Garrison. It was exactly what he would have wanted, a simple but moving ceremony for a man of plain speech but marvellous motivation, who was a true Laochra Gael. They buried him in a warm glow of blue and green, his beloved colours, and all flags flew at half mast in that picture-postcard village under Rossinver Braes.

JJ was a great Gurteen man, a great Garrison man, a great Devenish man, a great Fermanagh man and an exceptional person who made a huge mark in his 79 years on earth. And he did not do it by shouting or roaring, or by the modern corporate manipulation of people, but through the quiet force of his own persona, steady as a rock in times of storm, with an ability to motivate and mould young men and women into being the very best they could be.

John James Treacy was born in November 1936 near Garrison, Co Fermanagh, eldest of 10 children to Tommy Treacy, a farmer, and his wife Rita (née McGrath). John James remained its spiritual leader of the family right up until his death. He was that rara avis, a great leader with no ego, but he had a shining, driving work ethic and always led by example. And it was this courage that endeared him most to all those Fermanagh men with whom he won an All-Ireland junior title in 1959.

John James was 23 years old and a very solid wing back on that team and played for Fermanagh until the mid-1960s. He went on to captain, coach, cajole and train Devenish teams from the 1960s to the 1980s and won six county and league titles after a stellar playing career that began at St Colman's, Newry in the early 1950s. Education was a great word in the Treacy family and JJ was on an Ulster Colleges team in 1954 and served as principal in St Mary's, Brollagh and St Comghall's, Lisnaskea. He was head boy in St Colman's and learned a lot about the 'Down style' of Gaelic football, one he was to bring back to his native Fermanagh. JJ was only 24 when he trained a Devenish Mulleek team to a Fermanagh county championship and that was the start of a golden era for the club in 1960.

John James and his brother PT Treacy (Fermanagh's greatest ever Gaelic footballer) were the heartbeat of that wonderful side that took county championships and league titles as regular as tea. In 1970 and 1971 he was also at the heart of something really special when he took Fermanagh under-21s to two successive All-Irelands, and was a trainer/selector of the senior team that reached its first ever Ulster final in 1982. He was also a selector on the Fermanagh team that won its first ever All-Ireland B title in 1996. And he was a very efficient secretary, historian and spiritual leader of his own Devenish club for all of his life, and was president at the time of his passing.

More than 800 turned out to pay their last respects in St Michael's Church, Enniskillen where they heard Monsignor Peter O'Reilly say: “John James never did all of these things for himself, he did it for others.

“He had this knack of motivating, of making you believe in yourself and it was because that he said it, that you believed it. And a lot of young men owe a debt of gratitude to him and some of us older ones too."

There was a guard of honour at St. Michael’s by the remaining members of the 1959 team, the 1982 team and the current Fermanagh Senior Team. In Garrison, there was a guard of honour by members of the Devenish Club.

John James Treacy is survived by his wife Fanchea, sons Conal, Ciaran, Brian and Eoin, and 13 grandchildren brothers PT, Michael, Gerry, Eugene and Paul and sisters Maura, Ann and Francis. His sister Bridie predeceased him, as did his beloved daughter Aveen.

The Blooming Bright Star of Belle Isle

One evening as I strayed out for pleasure/Where beauty and love do resort

It was down by the banks of Lough Erne/I wandered for pleasure and sport

Where the maidens do sing at their labour/Through hardships and trouble and toil

There I met with a beautiful fair one/Called the lovely sweet Star of Belle Isle.

I instantly stepped it up to her/She approached me right there with a smile

Saying I am no lady of honour/But a poor working maid of Belle Isle

Oh Mary resign from your labours/And come to the town of St John's

'Tis there many pleasures await you/And servants all at your command

Oh, I'll not resign from my labours/Through hardships and troubles and toil

I'll wait for the lad that has left me/Here alone by the banks of Belle Isle

So now I've a story to tell you/I'm only a maid that is true

But to break the fond vows that I made him/Is a thing that I never will do

I ne'er thought that Cupid would win me/But beauty it did me beguile

For seven long years I've been wandering/For you lovely Star of Belle Isle

Now I heard that this couple got married/In wedlock they have joined their hands

For him she crossed over the ocean/Far away from the town of St John's

May the great King of Glory protect them/May liberty shine on their toil

May Johnny find comfort for ever/With his beautiful Star of Belle Isle
